Timeline PhotosThree women shared their stories with us about ovarian cancer.
Alison says: "I was diagnosed first with breast cancer, and very quickly after with Stage 4 metastatic ovarian cancer. That was how I found out I carry a faulty BRCA gene.

"At the time, it was the first I’d heard of BRCA. Not only were my symptoms not recognised, which meant the cancers had time to spread, but no doctor, nor specialist nor gynaecologist I saw was BRCA-aware. Therefore I was never considered for the life-saving preventative surgery available.

"While it’s too late for me, it’s not too late for my daughter, Gaby. After my diagnosis, she also tested positive, and this was the start of her journey to become a Previvor – someone who has had preventative surgery. It’s not a decision to take lightly. The surgery is harsh. But having seen the pain and suffering that cancer and chemotherapy brought to my life, in Gaby’s opinion there was no option.

"It’s so important for both Gaby and myself to spread this knowledge. Finding out you carry a BRCA mutation changes your life, but it can also save your life. People need to know."

Would you be in the 60% unable to label a medical illustration???......Past Eve research surveyed 1000 women. Out of the women surveyed 44% were unable to label the vagina on a medical illustration, and 60% couldn't label the vulva.

So lets get V educated. The vagINa is the internal canal between the cervix and vulva, to remember just think, it has IN in it! The vulva is the name for all of the external genitals, including the outer and inner labia (lips), the clitoris and the Bartholin's glands (that secrete lubrication).

Get to know which is which, and get to know your normal. Check your vulva in the mirror and get familiar with how it looks and feels. If you notice any changes speak to your GP, or you can speak to our nurse-led information service, Ask Eve on nurse@eveappeal.org.uk, or call 0808 802 0019.
